New Year’s Resolutions – Part I – Warming To The Cold

The beginning of a new year always gets people to think about fresh starts and new beginnings. Feeling the accumulated burden of a year’s worth of not so great decisions, many people vow to take back their life in the form of New Year’s Resolutions. The majority of Americans will make a New Year’s Resolution, but only a tiny minority of them will actually follow through and honor their resolution. Continue reading

How to Eliminate ‘Runner’s Knee’ Pain

Today I want to share my success story in dealing with ‘runner’s knee’ pain. Many runners experience pain and swelling in the knee after long runs or high mileage increases. The most common cause of this pain is a condition known as patellofemoral syndrome, more commonly known as runner’s knee. This pain is caused by the knee cap rubbing on the sides of the femoral groove (at the base of the femur bone). This rubbing causes swelling and inflammation. Continue reading

USA 50k Trail Running Championships – Video

The USA 50k Trail Running Championships were held on September 22nd, 2012 at Mt. Bachelor in the Cascade Mountains of central Oregon. USA Track & Field holds USA Trail Championships at a wide variety of distances. Over the past 3 years, I have had great success in these championship races from 10k to the marathon, winning nine US Masters titles… But I’ve never done a 50k… and I was really nervous. Falling in Love… With Running

Do you love doing the things that you are committed to? Or do you simply feel pressured and obligated to do them because of a commitment you’ve made? Many people find themselves committed to routines that they don’t enjoy, and they seldom step back and allow themselves to view the activity from a distance and new perspective… to see the forest, rather than the leaves on the trees. How to Keep Yourself Running in the Winter

It’s that time of year again. Yes, THAT time of year. The time when the days are short, the afternoons dark and the temperature sinks well below the “it’s a nice day for a run” mark. As I type this the radio is chammering on about a low of 10 degrees tonight… We may still have another month of Fall remaining, but here in the north country Winter makes an early appearance. Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times August 3rd, 2011

Just before the start of the Mount Washington Road Race, the race director informs the anxious crowd that there is nothing to fear, “there is only one hill.” That lone ‘hill’ just happens to be the tallest mountain in the northeast and stands at 6,288 feet high. But nonetheless, it is just one hill. Continue reading
