After a year of stellar performances, Tim Van Orden, 43 of Bennington, Vermont was for the second year in a row named the USA Masters Mountain Runner of the Year. But the committee didn’t stop there. They also named Van Orden as the 2011 USA Masters Trail Runner of the Year. Continue reading

2011 USA Trail Series Champion
It’s been a long and expensive year of racing. My goal this year was to compete in all five of the U.S. Trail Running Series races, and with any luck, come in the top 5 overall. The series consists of the four U.S. Trail Championships at 10k, 15k, Half Marathon and Marathon, as well as the U.S. Mountain Running Championships. Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times August 3rd, 2011
Just before the start of the Mount Washington Road Race, the race director informs the anxious crowd that there is nothing to fear, “there is only one hill.” That lone ‘hill’ just happens to be the tallest mountain in the northeast and stands at 6,288 feet high. But nonetheless, it is just one hill. Continue reading

Week In Review: June 27th – July 3rd, 2011
The best laid plans of mice and men… This week my manly plans had me feeling like a mouse. A mouse that played chicken with the cat…. and lost. This was all thanks to the Cranmore Hill Climb, which served as the U.S. Mountain Running Championships this past Sunday the 26th. Continue reading

Weekly Training: June 20th – 26th, 2011
Having a great race at Mount Washington last week was a huge confidence builder. Running well on trails is one thing, but to do well in a mountain race you need to have a pair of mountain legs. So heading into the U.S. Mountain Running championships on Sunday, I was confident that I had a chance at another U.S. Masters title. Continue reading

Weekly Training: June 13th – 19th, 2011
Keeping up a substantial training load while in the middle of an important racing season can be a challenge. You don’t want to train too much and show up to your races tired, but you also don’t want to taper too much and lose fitness for races in the future. Continue reading

North Conway, NH (June 26th, 2011) – Top runners from across the country converged on this small New Hampshire town on Sunday to compete in the U.S. Mountain Running Championships. There is no ‘safe word’ at Loon Mtn.
It’s time once again for the most challenging race in the New England Mountain Running Series – The Loon Mountain Race. This demanding 5.8 mile race climbs well over 3,000 vertical feet with sections reaching 45% in slope. The best of New England will be out in full force tomorrow morning to test themselves on the double black diamond ski trail aptly called “Upper Walking Boss”… Continue reading

Lock and Load at the Cranmore Mtn. Hill Climb
Somehow 2009 has managed to zoom to the halfway point in the calendar and I find myself firmly entrenched in my 41st year. The race that I’ve been training for since January is now finally staring me square in the face. The USA Mountain Running Championships and North American-Central American-Caribbean (NACAC) Mountain Running Championships are to take place tomorrow, June 28th at 9:00am at Mt. Cranmore in North Conway, NH. Continue reading

Don’t Let Insecurity Hold You Back
While on a road trip to the Seacoast of New Hampshire, I stumbled upon some insights into my past and it’s effect on my current behavior. I’ll admit it, I’m an information junkie… I’m passionately curious. But where does this curiosity and quest for knowledge come from? I’m pretty sure that it comes from my feeling of academic insecurity that I developed in college. Continue reading →
