USA 50k Trail Running Championships – Video
The USA 50k Trail Running Championships were held on September 22nd, 2012 at Mt. Bachelor in the Cascade Mountains of central Oregon. USA Track & Field holds USA Trail Championships at a wide variety of distances. Over the past 3 years, I have had great success in these championship races from 10k to the marathon, winning nine US Masters titles… But I’ve never done a 50k… and I was really nervous. Van Orden Wins 9th U.S. Title in the 50K
Among the elite field was trail ace Tim Van Orden, 44, of Bennington, Vermont. Despite winning the 2011 USA Trail Running Championship Series, Van Orden was nervous about competing in his first ultra marathon (longer than 26.2 miles). “I’ve had some injuries and missed some training recently, so I wasn’t sure I’d even be able to finish a 50k, let alone do well. Ultra Marathon Tips From the Pros
Stepping up to your first ultra (longer than 26.2 miles) can be a scary thing. So before I toed the line for my first 50k, I wanted to make sure I got some advice from accomplished ultra/trail runners on how to do is safely and quickly. Not only was this my first 50k (The Flagline 50k), but it was also the USA 50k Trail Running Championships. Continue reading

Van Orden Takes Masters Crown at U.S. Half Marathon Trail Championships
Nearly eight hundred runners took on the challenge of the Dirty Half Marathon in Bend on Sunday. For the third year in a row, this race has served as the U.S. Half Marathon Trail Championships. Crystal clear blue skies and temps in the low thirties greeted runners as they barreled down the trail towards the Cascade Mountain Range and views of five snow-capped volcanoes. Continue reading

After a year of stellar performances, Tim Van Orden, 43 of Bennington, Vermont was for the second year in a row named the USA Masters Mountain Runner of the Year. But the committee didn’t stop there. They also named Van Orden as the 2011 USA Masters Trail Runner of the Year. Continue reading

2011 USA Trail Series Champion
It’s been a long and expensive year of racing. My goal this year was to compete in all five of the U.S. Trail Running Series races, and with any luck, come in the top 5 overall. The series consists of the four U.S. Trail Championships at 10k, 15k, Half Marathon and Marathon, as well as the U.S. Mountain Running Championships. Continue reading

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow could stop the competitors at the 2011 U.S. Trail Marathon Championships on Saturday. Capping a stellar year on the trails, Van Orden, 43, raced to his seventh U.S. Masters Trail Running victory and a sixth place overall finish. Continue reading

Van Orden breaks record at Mt. Ashland Hill Climb
The idyllic town of Ashland, Oregon is known for three things; the award winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival, world famous Lithia Park, and one of the best ultra-running trail scenes on the planet. Among the many race offerings to be found here is the Mt. Ashland Hill Climb Run. This event boasts the second largest climb of any mountain running race in the United States. The course gains 5,700 feet in elevation (more than a vertical mile). Only the Pikes Peak Ascent in Colorado climbs higher. Continue reading

Falling in Love… With Running
Do you love doing the things that you are committed to? Or do you simply feel pressured and obligated to do them because of a commitment you’ve made? Many people find themselves committed to routines that they don’t enjoy, and they seldom step back and allow themselves to view the activity from a distance and new perspective… to see the forest, rather than the leaves on the trees.
