Can Running Cure Depression?
Recent research confirms my experience that running is a very powerful anti-depressant. Many studies have shown that running or other types of endurance exercise are just as good if not better than ani-depressant medication, without the negative side effects. Continue reading

New Year’s Resolutions – Part I – Warming To The Cold
The beginning of a new year always gets people to think about fresh starts and new beginnings. Feeling the accumulated burden of a year’s worth of not so great decisions, many people vow to take back their life in the form of New Year’s Resolutions. The majority of Americans will make a New Year’s Resolution, but only a tiny minority of them will actually follow through and honor their resolution. Continue reading

How To Get Outside On Cold Rainy Winter Days
The weather outside is frightful, but I’m not going to sit here and feel spiteful. Instead, I’m going to follow a process that I’ve taught myself over the past few years, that helps to get me dressed, out the door and into action. It hasn’t failed yet. Perhaps you can apply these tools to the gray rainy days and challenges of your life. Continue reading

How to Eliminate ‘Runner’s Knee’ Pain
Today I want to share my success story in dealing with ‘runner’s knee’ pain. Many runners experience pain and swelling in the knee after long runs or high mileage increases. The most common cause of this pain is a condition known as patellofemoral syndrome, more commonly known as runner’s knee. This pain is caused by the knee cap rubbing on the sides of the femoral groove (at the base of the femur bone). This rubbing causes swelling and inflammation. Continue reading

USA 50k Trail Running Championships – Video
The USA 50k Trail Running Championships were held on September 22nd, 2012 at Mt. Bachelor in the Cascade Mountains of central Oregon. USA Track & Field holds USA Trail Championships at a wide variety of distances. Over the past 3 years, I have had great success in these championship races from 10k to the marathon, winning nine US Masters titles… But I’ve never done a 50k… and I was really nervous. Van Orden Wins 9th U.S. Title in the 50K
Among the elite field was trail ace Tim Van Orden, 44, of Bennington, Vermont. Despite winning the 2011 USA Trail Running Championship Series, Van Orden was nervous about competing in his first ultra marathon (longer than 26.2 miles). “I’ve had some injuries and missed some training recently, so I wasn’t sure I’d even be able to finish a 50k, let alone do well. Continue reading

Falling in Love… With Running
Do you love doing the things that you are committed to? Or do you simply feel pressured and obligated to do them because of a commitment you’ve made? Many people find themselves committed to routines that they don’t enjoy, and they seldom step back and allow themselves to view the activity from a distance and new perspective… to see the forest, rather than the leaves on the trees.
