Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times – November 9th 2009

November 3rd marked the 4th Anniversary of the Running Raw Project and my 5th anniversary of stepping on to the raw path. What seemed like a very narrow path 5 years ago has become quite the popular thoroughfare. It really amazes me how quickly the tides of change can sweep upon our shores… Continue reading

Speed Works!

This past Sunday at the Northfield Mtn. Race (New England Trail Championships) I felt like I had been hit by a truck. The two weeks prior had been incredibly stressful. My grandfather passed away, two days before his 99th birthday after three days of struggling with congestive heart failure… Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times – October 15th, 2008

As a troubled teen, trying to find my place in the world, my father told me that “all glory is fleeting”. It was a quote from General George Patton, who was remarking on the lavish victory celebrations of ancient Rome. Continue reading

Climbing To The Top

With one of the biggest races in Running Raw history only three days away (US Bank Tower Stair Climb in Los Angeles on September 26th), I thought I’d keep you posted on my preparation for this monumental event – 76 storeys, 1,500 steps… Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times September 16th, 2008

All’s Quiet on the Eastern Front:
A clean, simple, plant-based diet/lifestyle is only one piece in the puzzle of true health. A potentially larger and more important factor in truly thriving is emotional well-being. Over the last six months it has become increasingly clear to me that I have a great deal to learn about my emotions and how they impact my life and my health Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times – March 22nd, 2008

A good soldier will march all day long for the right leader or cause. If you were to ask them if they minded the monotony and physical labor of such a task, I’m sure they would almost all respond with “yes, I mind”. But a good soldier does what they are supposed to do, even when it bothers, exhausts or frightens them. Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times – December 26, 2007

Any good fruit farmer will tell you that in order to get the best fruit, you have to prune the trees. If you let them grow to their full size, they will have smaller fruit and it will be harder to harvest. The Running Raw Project has grown into a very large beautiful tree, but it’s fruit has grown small and it’s now out of my reach. Continue reading

Mt. Equinox Snowshoe

When I initially came to Vermont I was quite worried that my training would come to a halt as winter arrived. The icy roads and cold temps make running far more challenging and dangerous. In addition, we’ve had a very snowy November and December so far. So, I’ve been forced to become creative with my training and take advantage of what a Vermont Winter has to offer. Continue reading

Ship Shape!

It’s a beautiful fall day in Los Angeles. A cold front has moved down from Alaska to temper the constant California sun, there is a light breeze and plentiful white fluffy clouds in the sky to offer shade. Perfect running weather. I took this opportunity to test myself against my nemesis – the Paseo Miramar trail… Continue reading

Cool Canyon, Cold War and Combating Candida

On one of my last runs in Los Angeles I head back to where it all began. Ten years ago, upon arriving in LA, and yearning for the mountains and greenery of Vermont, I was introduced to the magical world of Sullivan Canyon. This oak and sycamore lined trail is still a favorite to this day. But travel to trail’s end, and you will find yourself in a very different world – that of the cold war… Continue reading
