Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Update – May 11th, 2011
Another year has ticked by and I’m beginning my 43rd lap around the Sun. With a solid year of training and racing behind me, I’m entering into the 2011 USA Trail Running Championship Series in the best shape of my life. In the past few weeks, I’ve set two new lifetime PR’s and the season is just beginning. On May 14th, I’ll be attempting to defend my championship title at the U.S. 15k Trail Championships in Spokane, WA. Continue reading

Weekly Training 1/31/11 – 2/6/11
The week started off with a taper for the Empire State Building Run Up. All of the long hours of cross training these past 6 weeks seems to have paid off as I shaved 44 seconds off my best time in the race and finished as the 1st American and 4th overall. Wow! That was unexpected! Continue reading

The Top Ten of 2010
The year 2010 can summed up in a single sentence – “As you sow, so shall you reap.” After five years of what seemed at times to be an exercise in futility, I actually have some results that I’m proud to share. The pride I feel is not based in my own egotistical needs for validation, but in the knowing that there is now rock solid evidence that one can reach the peak of athletic performance on a diet of simple fruits and vegetables. Continue reading

A day in the life of Running Raw
People often ask me what I eat each day and how much I train. So today I thought I’d give you a snapshot of a day in the life of the Running Raw Project. At present I’m preparing for the upcoming World Championships of Stair Climbing at the Empire State Building on February 1st. Continue reading

Empire State Character Building
If I were to choose one sport to define myself as an athlete, it would be stair climbing. As much as I love the challenge and scenery of mountain running and snowshoe racing, neither has impacted me as profoundly as running up the dim, dusty, and denatured stairwells of America. Ironically, it is the sport that I like the least. In fact, I dread it. My relationship with stair climb races could be summed up with the following statement – It is better to have climbed than to climb… Continue reading

A 22 Storey Sprint
Planning is not my forté. In fact, I’m pretty darn awful at it. I had intended to compete in the 52 storey Climb California race in San Francisco. Last year I placed second in this event and was eager to come back and demonstrate my new fitness. That didn’t work out, so I decided on plan B – the 38 storey Climb Pittsburgh race. Well, that didn’t work out either, so I had to settle for plan C – a 22 storey climb at the University of Albany in Albany, NY. Third time’s a charm. Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times – March 22nd, 2008
A good soldier will march all day long for the right leader or cause. If you were to ask them if they minded the monotony and physical labor of such a task, I’m sure they would almost all respond with “yes, I mind”. But a good soldier does what they are supposed to do, even when it bothers, exhausts or frightens them. Continue reading

Tim VanOrden’s Running Raw Times – March 5th, 2010
The Year in Review?
Many people think that I live a charmed life. I get to run, hike, race, travel, talk to people and basically do whatever I want. What could be better? In many regards this is true. I have chosen to pursue something that I believe in strongly, something that I believe can make a difference. There is great freedom in that choice. But there is also great responsibility and sacrifice… Continue reading →
